Core values
The process
- 1Application & online tests
Online application plus online assessments.
- 2HireVue video interview
One way video. For the 2027 cycle this is three questions, 30 seconds to read and up to three minutes to record each. Q1 and Q3 are the same for every candidate; Q2 is drawn from a rotating competency pool. Used across spring weeks and summer internships.
- 3Assessment centre
Competency and technical interviews, sometimes with curveball or estimation questions. For the investment bank, expect DCF, LBO, merger models and the three statements.
What Bank of America screens for
- A specific reason for Bank of America, ideally tied to its Responsible Growth strategy
- Fit with its four values: deliver together, act responsibly, realize the power of our people, trust the team
- Problem solving, teamwork and communication, which the HireVue assesses directly
- Structured reasoning on curveball and estimation questions
- Clear fundamentals at the assessment centre: DCF, LBO, merger models, the three statements
The AI marks your answers against this emphasis — not just a generic rubric.
The 2027 HireVue is three questions, and two of them are fixed
Confirmed from a candidate's own 2027 cycle assessment: 30 seconds to read each question and up to three minutes to record. Q1 and Q3 are identical for every candidate, so prepare those two properly. Q2 is pulled from a rotating competency pool; the seven variants below are the ones we have seen, and they all reward the same STAR structure.
- Q1 of 3 Always this question
To start, we would like to learn more about you. Can you tell me about yourself and why you are interested in this program and/or business?
HireVueVery commonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
This slot is identical for every candidate, so it is the one answer worth scripting. Run a tight three part structure: who you are now, the two or three experiences that led you to this specific business, and what you want from the programme. Name the division you applied to and say something only true of Bank of America, such as Responsible Growth, the scale of the balance sheet, or Merrill and the wealth franchise. You have three minutes but do not use all of it. Two minutes of clear signal beats three of padding.
Verified from a candidate's own 2027 assessment - Q3 of 3 Always this question
What is one major current event happening in the world right now, and how might it impact the markets and the role you've applied for?
HireVueVery commonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Also fixed for every candidate, so prepare it properly and refresh it the week you record. Pick one event you can actually explain, not the biggest headline. Then do the two things the question literally asks: trace the market impact through a mechanism (rates, credit spreads, FX, commodity input costs, deal volumes) and connect it to the specific role. If you applied to investment banking, land on what it does to M&A and financing activity. Have a view and say it plainly. A described event with no consequence scores badly.
Verified from a candidate's own 2027 assessment - Q2 of 3 Rotates between candidates
Describe a time when you were working on a project where you were the subject matter expert on a specific topic. What was the goal of the project and how did you use your subject matter expertise to make sure everyone was able to understand what you were conveying?
HireVueCommonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
The signal is translation, not expertise. State the goal, establish briefly why you were the one who knew the topic, then spend most of the answer on how you made it land for people who did not: the analogy you used, what you cut, how you checked they had followed. Finish on the decision your explanation unlocked.
Verified from a candidate's own 2027 assessment - Q2 of 3 Rotates between candidates
Tell me about a time when you had to present detailed or complicated information to a customer, teammate, professor, or manager. In your response, please share how you prepared for the meeting, what made it detailed or complicated, and how you presented the information to ensure your message was effectively communicated.
HireVueCommonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
The prompt names three things it wants, so answer all three in order: your preparation, what specifically made it complicated, and how you delivered it. Be concrete about the complexity (competing data, a technical audience gap, bad news) rather than calling it complicated. Close with evidence it worked, such as a decision made or a question you had pre-empted.
Verified from a candidate's own 2027 assessment - Q2 of 3 Rotates between candidates
Describe a situation where you used research or data to solve a problem. In your response, tell me about the problem, how you used the research and data to come to a solution and how did you communicate this information?
HireVueCommonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Name the actual data and where it came from. Walk the chain: problem, what you gathered, what the analysis showed, what you decided. Quantify the outcome if you can. The third part is the one candidates drop, so explicitly cover how you communicated it and to whom.
Verified from a candidate's own 2027 assessment - Q2 of 3 Rotates between candidates
Tell us about a time you solved a complex problem that required a lot of thought and careful analysis on your part. In your response, please describe the problem, the analysis you performed, your solution and why you chose it, obstacles you had to overcome, and how your solution was implemented.
HireVueCommonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Five explicit parts here: problem, analysis, solution plus why, obstacles, implementation. Budget your three minutes across all five rather than spending two on the setup. The differentiator is why you chose that solution over the alternative you rejected, and the fact that it actually got implemented.

Which one of your key accomplishments best illustrates your personal initiative and willingness to push beyond what is required?
HireVueCommonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Pick something nobody asked you to do. That is the whole test. Make clear what the baseline expectation was and what you did beyond it, then quantify the result. An impressive achievement that was simply your assigned job does not answer this question.
Verified from a candidate's own 2027 assessment - Q2 of 3 Rotates between candidates
Tell us about a time that you had to persuade people to accept your point of view or recommendation. In your response, please describe the situation, the actions you took to influence your stakeholders, how you handled any objections, and the final outcome.
HireVueCommonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Influence without authority is what is being measured. Say who you needed to convince and why they started out unconvinced. Handle the objection explicitly, including what you conceded, because a story where nobody pushed back shows no persuasion at all. End on whether they actually moved.
Verified from a candidate's own 2027 assessment - Q2 of 3 Rotates between candidates
Tell us about a time that you were given a project or task, but did not receive clear instructions. How did you approach this situation? In your response, please share what the project or task was, how you handled the situation and figured out the proper approach to come to a final outcome.
HireVueCommonConfirmed 2026–27Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Ambiguity tolerance, which is most of a first year analyst's job. Show the sequence: what you clarified yourself, what you asked and of whom, the assumptions you wrote down, and how you checked in before going too far. The wrong answer is either freezing until told, or charging ahead and building the wrong thing.

Motivation & fit4
Why Bank of America?
HireVueVery commonReported 2024–25Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Lead with something genuinely BofA: its Responsible Growth strategy, its scale as the second largest US bank, Merrill and its wealth franchise, or a specific division. Tie it to your goals and avoid a generic line.
Why are you applying for this position?
HireVueCommonReported 2024–25Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Show you understand what the role actually involves and connect it to your skills and a real interest. Specific beats polished.
Why do you want to do this spring or insight programme?
HireVueSpring weekCommonReported 2024–25Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
For a spring week, motivation is everything: what you want to learn, why now, and why BofA specifically. Show curiosity and a clear reason you applied here.
Why Bank of America over another bank?
InterviewCommonReported 2024–25Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
Draw a real contrast: BofA's Responsible Growth, its balance sheet strength and its Merrill wealth franchise versus the alternative, connected to what you want. Vague comparisons get exposed.
Behavioural & competency2
Tell me about a time you worked in a team.

STAR. Frame the problem, the options you weighed, what you did, and the outcome. BofA's HireVue assesses problem solving directly, so make your reasoning visible.
Commercial awareness2
What investment would you make if you had £100,000?
InterviewCommonReported 2024–25Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
A genuinely BofA reported question. Give a clear thesis: what you would buy, why the risk and reward stacks up, one catalyst and the key risk. Structure and reasoning matter more than the specific pick.
Estimate the financial value generated by tie sales in the USA.
InterviewOccasionalReported 2023–24Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
A classic BofA curveball. Do not blurt a number, build it up: US population, the share who wear ties regularly, ties bought per person per year, and an average price, then multiply and sanity check the total. They are testing structured reasoning, not the exact figure.

Walk me through an LBO or a merger model.
InterviewSummerCommonReported 2024–25Practise this questionWhat a strong answer covers ↓Hide ↑
For an LBO: sources and uses, a debt schedule, cash paying down debt, then exit, with returns from paydown, growth and multiple expansion. For a merger model: combine the two companies' earnings and test whether the deal is accretive or dilutive to EPS. BofA lists both as fair game.
